Jerry Springer, the brash talk show host who mediated tumultuous relationships and family feuds and who briefly served as mayor of Cincinnati, died Thursday at his home in Chicago. He turned 79.

Mr. Springer’s death, after a short illness, was confirmed in a statement by Jene Galvin, a family friend and executive producer of Mr. Springer’s podcast.

“The Jerry Springer Show” lasted nearly three decades, peaking in the 1990s. Whatever drama had taken place in front of a studio audience and viewers tuning in from home, Mr. Springer ended each segment with a signature: “Take care of yourself and each other.”
